Your Old Myspace Login & Password Is For Sale

Time Inc. confirmed on Tuesday that Myspace has been the victim of a hacking incident.

Last week, before the Memorial Day weekend, the Myspace technical security team discovered that user login data were up for sale in an “online hacker forum.” They believe the hacker responsible goes by the name of “Peace” and that he is also responsible for the recent hacks of Tumblr and LinkedIn.

Myspace writes, in a blog announcing the hack, what information was involved: “Email addresses, Myspace usernames, and Myspace passwords for the affected Myspace accounts created prior to June 11, 2013 on the old Myspace platform are at risk.”

The hack has already been reported and Myspace is in the process of notifying all affected users and working proactively with law enforcement authorities to resolve this issue. They have also invalidated the passwords of all known affected users and is monitoring for suspicious activity that might occur on Myspace accounts.

Jeff Bairstow, Time Inc. Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, stated, “We take the security and privacy of customer data and information extremely seriously—especially in an age when malicious hackers are increasingly sophisticated and breaches across all industries have become all too common. Our information security and privacy teams are doing everything we can to support the Myspace team.”

What you can do: “If you use passwords that are the same or similar to your Myspace password on other online services, we recommend you set new passwords on those accounts immediately.”
