China has the early lead in the medal count at the 2012 London Olympics.

  3. France-3
  4. Italy-2

  8. Kazakhstan-2
  9. Japan-1
  10. Australia-1

The U.S. placed in three other swimming competitions and finished with a silver in archery, losing the championship match to Italy. The United States received a gold medal courtesy of Ryan Lochte, who was the winner of the men’s 400 meter individual medley. Fellow American Michael Phelps finished fourth.
