‘A Gentleman’s Guide’ Leads Tony Award Nominations

The Tony Award nominations were announced on Tuesday morning and musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” led the pack with 10 nods, including one for new tuner and two competing nominations for lead musical actor. At second best was “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” with eight nominations, including one for Best Musical Revival, followed by musicals “After Midnight” and “Beautiful,” and plays “The Glass Menagerie” and “Twelfth Night,” which notched seven nominations each.

There are a lot of big names up for a Tony Award this year, including Bryan Cranston, who received a nod in the Lead Actor category for his part in “All the Way.” Other nominees in that group include Samuel Barnett (“Twelfth Night”), Chris O’Dowd (“Of Mice and Men”), Mark Rylance (“Richard III”) and Tony Shalhoub (“Act One”). Neil Patrick Harris is a notable mention, being nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of an East German transgender singer in the play “Hedwig.”

The Best Actress in a Play nominees are Audra McDonald (“Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill”), Tyne Daly (“Mothers and Sons”), Estelle Parsons (“The Velocity of Autumn”), LaTanya Richardson Jackson (“A Raisin in the Sun”) and Cherry Jones (“The Glass Menagerie”).

The Best Musical nominees are “After Midnight,” “Aladdin,” “Beautiful – The Carole King Musical” and “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.”

The Best Play nominees are “Act One,” “All the Way,” “Casa Valentina,” “Mothers and Sons” and “Outside Mullingar.”

The Best New Play nominees include James Lapine’s “Act One,” Terrance McNally’s “Mothers and Sons,” Robert Schenkkan’s “All the Way,” John Patrick Shanley’s “Outside Mullingar” and Harvey Fierstein’s “Casa Valentina.”

The 68th annual Tony Awards, hosted by Hugh Jackman, will be held on June 8 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
