ESPN vs. Daniel Tosh: What’s the Beef?

Daniel Tosh expressed his anger at ESPN on his show Tosh.0 Tuesday night. The comedian claims that ESPN’s SportsCenter stole his segment titled “Web Redemption,” in which he gives people a chance to redeem themselves after suffering a major embarrassment on a video that has gone viral.

ESPN recently introduced a new segment called “Awesome Video Segment,” and the network interviewed a singer who tripped over a red carpet while singing the Canadian national anthem during a hockey game. ESPN gave him another chance to sing the anthem without any mishaps, and the reporter even used the same catchphrase as Tosh when he asked the singer if he wanted “to give it another shot.”

“You … hacks are cheaping my brand,” Tosh said. “I’m fine with kids in high school or college plagiarizing, but once you work for a real network, you should have some … self-respect.”

Tosh also aired a feature last night titled “Sport Science.0.,” which consists of Tosh slamming SportsCenter. It was his version of ESPN’s segment “Sports Science.”

“This was more of an instance of us using a common phrase than it was copying his wording,” ESPN in response to the accusations. “We know that doesn’t sound like the strongest explanation yet it’s the truth.We are looking forward to ‘giving it another shot’ in future installments of ‘The Awesome Video Segment.'”
