‘Sharknado 2’ Sets Ratings Record for Syfy

Sharknado 2: The Second One, the sequel to Syfy’s campy disaster movie Sharknado, aired last night and scored great ratings.

The film garnered 3.9 million viewers, which included 1.6 million adults ages 18-49. With these numbers, it became the network’s most watched original movie. Sharknado 2 drew 183% more viewers than the original film, which only had 1.4 million viewers when it premiered last year. It also beat out its competition for the night, which included CBS’ Halle Berry drama Extant and Fox’s reality competition series So You Think You Can Dance.

Sharknado 2 made an impact on social media last night, topping Nielsen’s TV Twitter rating Daily Top Five list with 581,000 tweets. Syfy estimates that the film made over 1 billion Twitter impressions.

Syfy will be airing encores of the movie this weekend. Another sequel is already in the works for summer 2015.
