Social Media Pokes Fun At Olympic Opening Ceremony Malfunction

After several reports of unfinished facilities and “appalling conditions” at the Olympic Village in Sochi, many were hoping the 2014 Winter Olympics opening ceremony would go off without a hitch. However, the lavish show suffered a major malfunction minutes after it began.

Five snowflakes were set to open up and morph into Olympic rings during the opening ceremony, but the ring on the far right remained closed with the huge display apparent for millions of viewers to see. Inevitably, the world took to Twitter to comment on the incident.

“$50 billion and they couldn’t even get the rings right!” said one viewer, while another viewer took a swipe at Russia’s controversy over gay rights, “The ring on the far right is obviously gay & not included!”

A pattern began to emerge among tweets with a viewer saying, ‘The person responsible for that fifth ring is currently being dragged into the basement of the Lubyanka,” and another following along similar lines, commenting “Snowflake transformation designer just left by the back door and transferred their home phone to an exchange somewhere in Siberia!”

The Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony in Sochi, Russia will be broadcast on NBC tonight at 6:30 PM.
