Lin-Manuel Miranda Bids Farewell To ‘Hamilton’

On Saturday night (July 9th), Lin-Manuel Miranda gave his final performance as Alexander Hamilton in the beloved Broadway hit Hamilton at the Renaissance Hotel in New York City. The performance also marked the final appearances of his co-stars Leslie Odom Jr. (who played Aaron Burr) and Phillipa Soo (who played Eliza Schuyler).

For the final curtain call, the orchestra played the theme to the political TV series The West Wing – a favorite of Miranda’s.

Miranda – who has won 11 Tony Awards for his role – is the creator and star of the groundbreaking musical. In a press release, it was confirmed that his alternate Javier Muñoz would be taking over as Alexander Hamilton starting July 11th, and Brandon Victor Dixon and Lexi Lawson now take the parts of Burr and Schuyler. Miranda will soon be starring in Walt Disney Pictures’ Mary Poppins Returns opposite of Emily Blunt (to be released on December 25th, 2018).

Tickets for Miranda’s final show were listed for as much as $20,000 on ticket re-sale sites like StubHub. The crowd included an array of celebrities, from Jennifer Lopez, Rosie O’Donnell, Jane Fonda, Secretary of State John Kerry and more.

Backstage, following his final performance, Miranda celebrated by chopping off his long hair, which he grew for the role.

“It’s been a bit of a day,” Miranda tweeted Saturday. “Wits intact. Love you. Good night.”
