Gone Girl, the thriller based on Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel, remains at No. 1 at the box office in its second weekend of release.
The R-rated film, starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, took in an additional $26.8 million over the weekend and has reached a cumulative total of $78.3 million. At this rate, David Fincher’s adaptation is on its way to become his personal top-grossing film, surpassing current frontrunner The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ($127.5 million).
Ranking in at No. 2 is Universal and Legendary Pictures’ Dracula Untold, which debuted this weekend with an outstanding $23.5 million across 2,887 theaters. Costing $70 million to produce, the film follows the story of how Vlad the Impaler (Luke Evans) became the world’s most famous vampire.
“It’s a very, very solid result,” said Nikki Rocco, Universal’s distribution chief. “It’s not a horror film. It’s an untold story and there is some romance which appeals to females.”
Of those stated females, 43 percent were present in the audience to witness the telltale origins of Dracula, with 50 percent of total moviegoers under the age of 30.
Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day opened over the weekend with $19.1 million from 3,088 locations. Landing at No. 3, the $28-million production caters to a more family-friendly audience, and stars Jennifer Garner and Steve Carell as the parents to Alexander (Ed Oxenbould). The film is an adaptation of Judith Viorst’s 1972 children’s book about a family suffering through a horrible day.
Last week’s horror blockbuster, Annabelle, falls at No. 4 at the box office with $16.4 million in its second week of release. Though the film dropped 58 percent this week, the Conjuring prequel successfully gathered up a worldwide total of $122.5 million.
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr.’s The Judge didn’t do as well as analysts previously expected, debuting at No. 5 with a disappointing $13.3 million from 3,003 theaters. Directed by David Dobkin, the film centers on a big city lawyer who returns to his childhood home where his father, the town’s judge, (played by Robert Duvall) is suspected of murder.
“We’re a little disappointed in the results for The Judge, since we were hoping to do at least $15 million. I’m very pleased with the CinemaScore, though, and good word of mouth can put us back in the game. Our audience was notably older, with 50 percent over the age of 50, and 71 percent over the age of 35. Sometimes, the older audience kicks in the second weekend,” said Dan Fellman, Warner’s President of Domestic Distribution.
The weekend’s three wide releases all earned a solid A minus CinemaScore from moviegoers.
