Robert Downey Jr. In Talks For ‘Captain America 3’

While Robert Downey Jr. previously stated that there are no plans for Marvels’ Iron Man to return for a fourth installment, the actor is in negotiations to suit up as the superhero in Captain America 3.

Exclusively reported by Variety, the film will begin production in the Spring and is expected to debut in theaters May 6, 2016. Currently, Downey will reprise his role as billionaire superhero Tony Stark in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron and Avengers 3. The former is set for a May 1, 2015 release, while the latter for a 2018 debut.

The third installment of Captain America will be directed by brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, who have both directed the successful Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

On Monday, Marvel Comics announced plans to adapt the Civil War series for next summer, posting a new cover on their Twitter account.

According to IGN, the 2006-2007 miniseries “explored what happened when the US government instituted the Superhuman Registration Act, requiring all heroes to reveal their identities to the government and submit to mandatory training. The SHRA caused the superhero community to split down the middle, with Iron Man leading the pro-registration faction and Captain America the underground resistance.”

Downey earned megabucks for Marvel and Disney when he starred as Iron Man in the first three Iron Man films, which earned a global total of $2.4 billion. In addition, the first Avengers took in a record-breaking $1.5 billion worldwide in 2012.

The actor can be seen in The Judge, which debuted in theaters over the weekend, and took in a disappointing $13.1 million. The film centers on a big city lawyer who returns to his childhood home where his father, the town’s judge, (played by Robert Duvall) is suspected of murder.
