Nintendo 3DS Tops 4 Million Units Sold in the U.S.

Nintendo has sold more than 4 million units of the 3DS gaming system in the United States since its launch on March 27, 2011.

The 3DS had a sluggish start until a price cut  and a new software line-up spiked sales during the holiday season.  In early December Nintendo released a statement announcing a record 795,000 3DS units sold in the month of November, topping 2.37 million units sold.  Now with the announcement of over 4 million units sold, December has broken the record with 1.2 million 3DS gaming systems sold in the month alone.

As for other systems, Nintendo sold 4.5 million units of the Wii, making for a lifetime US total of 39 million units.  The DS sold 3.4 million units in the US, bringing its total to over 51 million sold.

Nintendo’s next console, the Wii U, is expected to hit shelves in the second half of 2012.
