CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN: Backstage with Gabrielle Union

A modernized Cheaper by the Dozen is now on Disney+ and excitingly enough Dave Morales got the inside scoop on the highly anticipated film in our latest interview with movie star Gabrielle Union.

The Updated ‘Cheaper by the Dozen’

This unique version of Cheaper by the Dozen has the internet buzzing. While raising a blended family of ten kids, managing day-to-day life and a business becomes a challenge. This family film unravels the true meaning of a united family while battling occasional bumps in the road.

Union shared how this film is different from the original and why it is worth the watch.

“Bringing it up to date. Having our family reflect the change that has occurred for you know, forever. People of color have existed forever, but we have been categorically eliminated from participating in these kinds of fun family films. So by making us a blended family in every sense of the word, blended racially, culturally…you add in co-parenting we haven’t seen before,” she said.

“Our take is fresh, it’s new, it’s relevant. We tackle important issues, but in a kid-friendly, family friendly way.”

Gabrielle Union Pulling in her Mom Skills for Role

Union portrays Zoe Baker (mother) in the film. Her parenting tactics overlap with her character. However, there are some differences she points out.

“Zoe Baker has a lot more patience intact than I do. I basically try to learn from her. We really had to lean into our adulting just on set,” Union shared.

“There’s a lot of kids and multiple animals so me and Zach Braff (Paul Baker) had to act as a united front as parents to keep the train on the tracks. We had to make sure we hit our marks and we’re prepared, but still fun. We became a pretty solid parental unit.”
