Coming to theaters and Apple TV+ on Friday, ‘Luck’ tells the story of Sam Greenfield (voiced by Eva Noblezada), the unluckiest person in the world. However, she suddenly finds herself in the magical Land of Luck, where she must team up with the magical creatures of the land to change her luck.
In the film, Sam meets several magical creatures along her journey including Babe the Dragon, voiced by legendary Jane Fonda, and Jeff the unicorn voiced by Flula Borg. B0th actors sat down to chat with Dave Morales to discuss their roles in this magical animated adventure.
Jane Fonda: Babe The Dragon
Despite having an illustrious career this is actually Fonda’s first time lending her voice to an animated film. She tells Morales what drew her to the role, “Skydance, offered me this role of a dragon who’s the CEO of the kingdom of Luck, I mean who is gonna turn that down.”

She added, “I got involved early on so I had a chance to talk to the director (Peggy Holmes) and the animator. So I could raise questions like, “Maybe she’s a little vain, maybe she pays attention to how she dresses, maybe she has long eyelashes, maybe she uses her tail like a boa and flips it around her neck, maybe she’s a little ambiguous about the smoke and fire that can come out of her mouth at inopportune times, things like that.”
Fonda even stated that she helped come up with her character’s identity, “I wanted her to be called Babe, that was my idea,” said Fonda.
Stepping into a sound booth can be different and prove challenging even for the most seasoned of actors however Fonda stepped up to that challenge.

“I don’t think it’s easier or harder, it’s a different set of muscles. It’s a different challenge because you are not working with other actors. You’re working totally from your imagination with the help of the director because sometimes I would do it in a certain way, quietly and more personally. And the director would say “No, you are in a huge cavernous space talking to people that are far away”, so you would do it over again,” noted Fonda.
She added, “In that sense it’s different but I like challenges but I didn’t find it difficult in a bad way.” The long-time activist also spoke about what still drives her to make a change.
“I want to get to the end of my life and feel that I have done all that I could possibly do to make things better. I have grandchildren…and I worry about them having a future. I’ve had such an amazing life, I have snorkeled the great barrier reefs, I’ve climbed the Inca trail to Machu Pichu, and I’ve hiked in the Sequoia National Forest. I’ve done so much in the natural world, where I’m happiest, they may not be able to do that and that breaks my heart,” said Fonda.
She added, “I want to fight with every ounce of my passion and energy to get people to get up off the couch and go from concerned to action, take action and try to help people understand what that action might be.”
Flula Borg: Jeff the Unicorn
Speaking with actor and comedian Flula Borg, Dave Morales asks the actor if he would wear the outfit that his character Jeff wears in the film.
“I’m so glad you brought this up, I did not tell the wonderful production staff here but I very much wanted to have a replica of that outfit so that I could wear it during all of these interviews and after those interviews forever and ever, amen, yes!” said Borg.
When asked whether or not he believes in luck and superstition Borg jokingly said, “I believe in safety so I also do not walk under ladders. You don’t need to do this for superstition sometimes science is like a really great guide I found.”
Luck: Flula Borg
With luck being the central theme of the film the actor told BackstageOL what he does to have a lucky day. “Every morning I just write down three things I am grateful for and then my brain starts to see good things because if you want to see gross dumb things they are very easy to find. You don’t have to look hard but also if you want to find sassy fun happy things and great things also not that hard to find so that’s what I do,” stated Borg.
Borg goes on to say what he thinks is the real magic behind the film. “We explore many things, the real world, this magical land of luck. I love that we meet all of these different characters that embody different types of luck.”
Borg added, “I think that is also very wonderful, I think the message is great, we explored good luck, and bad luck but really what is good luck? Sometimes that’s bad luck and vice versa and really, in the end, it’s just about your connections with other humans uh companionship love relationships friendships that’s what it’s all about.”
