Spielberg and Jackson Bring Next Mega-Trilogy to US

Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) have teamed up to bring the next mega-trilogy of movies to the United States based on the Belgian comic-book series “The Adventures of Tintin”.

The “Adventures of Tintin” is a series of classic comic books created and written by Belgian artist Georges Remi, under the pen name Herge, published from 1929-1976. The humorous mystery series is set in the 20th century and followed current events of its time including WWI, the Bolshevik Revolution, WWII, and even the moon landings.

After Tintin creator Herge’s death in 1983 Spielberg acquired the writes for the Tintin series. Thirty years later, Steven Spielberg has teamed up with “Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson to bring this classic comic series to life.

Using performance capture computer animation from Jackson’s company Weta Digital, Speilberg is creating his first animation picture ever.

Combining the stories of The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure, “The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn” will be the first installment of the trilogy series. The film will depict Tintin in his first encounter with Captain Haddock, portrayed by Andy Serkis (King Kong), and their quest to find the treasure left by his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock.

Tintin was originally casted to be portrayed by Thomas Sangster but due to production delays in October 2008 Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) stepped in to fulfill the role. Other familiar faces include Daniel Craig (Munich/Cowboys and Aliens), Simon Pegg (Star Trek) and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz).

Directed by Steven Spielberg and Produced by Peter Jackson “The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn” is slated for a Christmas release on December 23, 2011 in the United States.
