Box Office Preview: ‘Sully’ Flying Past ‘Blair Witch,’ ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’

Newcomers Bridget Jones’s Baby, Blair Witch and Snowden enter the box office this weekend, but it’s last weekend’s champion, Clint Eastwood’s Sully, who is likely to keep its crown.

Sully is eyeing to stay at the top of the charts, expected to add another $22 million-plus at 3,525 locations, according to analysts. On Friday, the film took in $6.6 million.

The action-adventure, starring Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, tells the true story of US Airways Flight 1549, which had to make an emergency landing in 2009. The incident came to be known as the “Miracle on the Hudson,” with Sully becoming an instant hero.

Lionsgate’s Blair Witch, the direct sequel to the 1999 found-footage classic horror film, is eyeing a $10 million debut from 3,121 theaters after earning $4.1 million on Friday. It received a rarely seen D-plus CinemaScore from moviegoers.

The original film, The Blair Witch Project, was a box office phenomenon, scoring nearly $250 million in worldwide grosses. A year later, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 hit theaters and grossed $48 million worldwide.

Fifteen years after Bridget Jones’s Diary – the latest installment, Bridget Jones’s Baby, reunites Renee Zellweger and Colin Firth, and brings in Patrick Dempsey and Emma Thompson as newcomers.

After its meager $3 million start on Friday, Universal’s British romantic comedy is now looking to open with $9 million from 2,927 locations. The film earned a B-plus CinemaScore.

The final wide box office entry is Oliver Stone’s Snowden, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as N.S.A. whistleblower Edward Snowden. The film, which earned an A CinemaScore, is expected to debut somewhere in the $9 million range from 2,443 theaters. Shailene Woodley, Zachary Quinto, Melissa Leo and Tom Wilkinson also star.
