Box Office Recap: ‘Don’t Breathe’ Wins Labor Day Weekend

Sony’s horror thriller Don’t Breathe has won the Labor Day box office, earning $15.7 million from 3,051 theaters in its second weekend for an estimated four-day gross of $19.4 million.

In its fifth weekend out, Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad followed in second place with $10 million for the three days, on course for a four-day earning of $13.7 million. The anti-superhero film has surpassed the $300 million mark – with a foreign total of $375.5 million.

The weekend’s new wide releases included Disney’s The Light Between Oceans and Fox’s Morgan, which debuted in sixth and 18th place, respectively.

Director Derek Cianfrance’s The Light Between Oceans opened with $4.9 million for the three days from 1,500 locations, for a projected four-day debut of $6 million. With a $20 million production cost, the drama – starring Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander and Rachel Weisz – follows the story of a lighthouse keeper and his wife who raise a baby they rescued from a rowboat that was washed ashore.

The film earned a B-plus CinemaScore from moviegoers – who were nearly half under the age of 50 – and a 61 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.

The weekend’s other newcomer Morgan earned a dismal $2 million from 2,020 theaters for a projected four-day gross of $2.4 million. The sci-fi thriller, holding a $6 million budget, centers on a robot (played by Anya Taylor-Joy) with superhuman qualities, who attacks one of her creators. The cast includes Kate Mara, Toby Jones, Rose Leslie, Boyd Holbrook, Michelle Yeoh, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Paul Giamatti.

The film, directed by Luke Scott, earned a 43 percent “fresh” score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and a C-plus CinemaScore from moviegoers.

To conclude the top five, third place goes to Disney’s Pete’s Dragon, which earned $6.47 million for the three days and an estimated $8.9 million for the four days. Focus Features’ Kubo and the Two Strings follows with $6.46 million for the three days ($8.7 million for the holiday weekend).

Finally, in fifth place is Sony’s fourth weekend of Sausage Party with $5.3 million, for a projected four-day debut of $6.7 million and a grand total of nearly $90 million domestically.
