Potential Oscar contender, The Butler, surprised many this weekend grossing an estimated $25 million, landing in the number one spot at this weekend’s box office. Starring Oscar winner Forest Whitaker, the historical drama is based on the real-life account of Eugene Allen, an African American butler at the White House who witnesses many notable events of the 20th century.
Turning out to be a disappointment, super hero sequel Kick-Ass 2 earned 32% less than the original in its opening weekend. The Universal release averaged a mediocre $13.6 million, landing the action packed comedy in fourth place at this weekend’s box office.
Opening at number seven this weekend was the biographical drama JOBS, based on the life of Steve jobs. Starring Ashton Kutcher, the film earned an estimated $6.7 million, falling short of the projected $9 million.
Lastly, utterly ignored by this weekend’s movie goers, was the release of the new thriller Paranoia. Falling short of the film’s projected $8 million, the thriller starring Liam Hemsworth and Gary Oldman brought in an estimated $3.5 million during its opening weekend, landing in thirteenth place.
Hitting theaters this weekend is The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Closed Circuit, Getaway, Riddick and One Direction: This Is Us 3D.
