Thor: The Dark World reigned king at the box office, earning over $86 million in North America in its opening weekend. The film stars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, who must battle to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. Thor: The Dark World has been an international success, earning $240 million overseas since the film opened internationally on October 30. With the film opening in North American this weekend, Thor has already made $327 million worldwide, surpassing its production budget of $170 million. Comparatively, 2o11’s Thor debuted at $65.7 million.
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa remains in second place in its third week. The Johnny Knoxville comedy earned an additional $11.3 million to bring its domestic total to $78.7 million. The film was produced for only $15 million, making Bad Grandpa one of Knoxville’s most successful films to date.
Relativity Media’s animated-comedy Free Birds took third place with $11.2 million in its sophomore week to bring its domestic total to $30.2 million. It’s beginning to look like the film will have to lean on Blu-ray and DVD sales to make up its $55 million budget.
The Las Vegas buddy-movie Last Vegas, starring Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, began to make a profit this weekend after taking home $11.1 million. Produced on a budget of only $28 million, Last Vegas has already earned $33.5 million domestically.
The big disappointment at the box office has been the science fiction film Enders Game, based on the book by Orson Scott Card. The film’s all-star cast of Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley and Viola Davis just isn’t enough to get moviegoers into theaters for this film, dropping from first to fifth place in its sophomore week with $10.3 million. So far, Enders Game has earned only $44 million domestically and has had limited success overseas, earning an additional $9.1 million. The film will most likely not recoup its $110 million production budget anytime soon, but 16-year-old Asa Butterfield, who you might remember from Martin Scorsese’s Huge, gives a great performance in the film and is a star to watch.
