Christmas Weekend: Will ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ Dethrone ‘The Hobbit’?

Early estimates show that The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug topped the box office on Christmas Day with $9.32 million, but Martin Scorsese has the potential to finally dethrone the sequel with his latest release The Wolf of Wall Street.

Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill, The Wolf of Wall Street follows the true story of Jordan Belfort, a New York stockbroker with huge ambitions to take over Wall Street, but will greed and excess get in his way?  The film debuted with $9.15 million on Christmas Day and it looks like Wolf will be in a head-to-head battle with Smaug for the coveted 5-day Christmas weekend box office report.

Trailing in third place is the Will Ferrell comedy Anchorman 2 with $8.1 million.  After a full week in theaters, the film has already recouped it’s production budget of $50 million and could pass the $70 million mark by Sunday.

Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty took fourth at the box office with a debut of $7.83 million while David O. Russell’s American Hustle is holding strong in its third week with $7.4 million on Christmas Day.
