Disney Launches Movie Streaming Service

To coincide with the digital release of the box office hit Frozen, Disney has launched a movie streaming service called Disney Movies Anywhere.

The streaming service, powered by iTunes, will be available across multiple platforms, including Apple TV, the iPad, the iPhone, the iPod touch, and the web. People will be able to buy and watch over 400 films from Disney, Pixar, and Marvel, and watch exclusive content and bonus features. Customers will be able to stream the movies from the app or download them to watch offline.

For a limited time, customers who connect their iTunes accounts to Disney Movies Anywhere will receive free digital copy of The Incredibles.

“Disney Movies Anywhere offers an exceptional consumer experience built around some of the most beloved and popular entertainment brands in the world,” said Walt Disney Studios president Alan Bergman. “This unique technology underscores Disney’s commitment to meeting our consumers where they are with the content they want, and we’re thrilled to debut with iTunes, the No. 1 digital media retailer in the world.”

Since 2008, Disney has provided redeemable digital codes in their DVD/Blu-rays. Those codes will now be redeemable with Disney Movies Anywhere.

“Disney Movies Anywhere is an adaptable digital ecosystem designed to help consumers consolidate their Disney movie collections and enjoy them for years to come,” said Jamie Voris, chief technology officer for Walt Disney Studios.

Disney also stated that it is currently in talks with other retailers about providing the service through other platforms in addition to iTunes.
