‘Independence Day 2’ Has Two Scripts, In Case Will Smith Says No

During an interview with Indiewire’s The Playlist, Roland Emmerich revealed that the script writers are currently developing for the Independence Day  sequel currently has two versions- one including Will Smith and another that does not.

Emmerich claimed that Smith was originally “too expensive” and “too marquee” for the sequel, but may be the missing factor in the production that is said to be “a daily battle.”  Along with Smith’s involvement still being up in the air, aspects of the production such as the budget, schedules and actors are all presenting problems for Emmerich, but he still remains optimistic.

While the plot of the sequel is being kept a secret, it has been rumored that the role of Captain Steven Hiler’s child is posed to be an essential role in the sequel.  Members of the cast that are supposed to be making a comeback are the characters of President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) and David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum).

When asked directly if Smith’s version of the script will be the one chosen, Emmerich refused to answer.   He said the chances of the sequel starring Will Smith is looking good.

If all goes well, Independence Day 2 will hit theaters on July 3, 2015.
