‘Iron Man 3’ On Pace for $160 Million Debut

Iron Man 3 is on track to have one of the largest debuts in cinematic history.

The Marvel superhero film has already sold-out over 400 screenings worldwide, according to BoxOffice.com.  Over 25% of the box office tickets sold in the U.S. are for the upcoming film starring Robert Downey Jr.

Iron Man 3 opens in Australia, France, Italy and eight other countries on Wednesday and in roughly 25 more foreign markets over the weekend,” Disney announced on Wednesday. “It will debut in China on the same day it does in the U.S.”

“This has been a slow start to the year in terms of moviegoing, and I think there’s a lot of pent-up demand,” said BoxOffice.com’s Editor-in-Chief Phil Contrino.. “I see no reason why ‘The Avengers’ crowd won’t turn out for this, and if that happens, the sky’s the limit.”

Marvel’s The Avengers holds the record for biggest opening weekend with $207 million.  The film is currently the third highest-grossing film of all time.

Will Iron Man 3 break the record?  It’s hard to tell.

The nation’s three top movie chains – AMC, Regal and Cinemark –  are currently not selling tickets for the film until a more favorable agreement with Disney has been made for the revenue split on ticket-sales.  Until those numbers start to come in, it will be hard to get an accurate depiction on what ticket pre-sales might actually be.
