A day after British film director Tony Scott committed suicide by jumping off the Vincent Thomas Bridge in Los Angeles, CA, questions arise as to the status of the planned sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun.
Tony, the younger brother of Ridley Scott, was best known for his blockbusters Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Enemy of the State, The Taking of Pelham 123, Unstoppable and his eleven other films.
The original plan was to reunite Scott, Tom Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer for a 2014 release of Top Gun 2. Although Scott never officially signed onto the project, the Los Angeles Times reported that he had every intention to do so.
Cruise has already begun prepping for the role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. KOLO TV confirmed that the Mission Impossible actor was spotted at the Naval Air Station in Fallon, NV in preparation for the upcoming sequel. While Cruise even took time to talk to the people of Fallon during his visit, there is no word on whether any scenes of the film will be filmed on the air base or in the nearby town.
As for now, the project is still being written by Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects). This is not the first time McQuarrie has worked with Cruise. The Academy Award winner wrote the script for 2008’s Valkyrie, a film about the real-life July 20, 1944 plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, which starred Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg.
There is no word as to whether the project will be delayed or completely scrapped.
