Sacha Baron Cohen has pulled himself out of the Freddie Mercury biopic about the late iconic lead singer of Queen.
Despite Cohen having a striking resemblance to Freddie Mercury, Cohen and the surviving bands members of Queen are unable to settle their creative differences over Mercury’s biopic. Cohen had been working on the biopic for the past three years with Oscar-winning writer Peter Morgan, directors David Fincher and Tom Hooper, and also with the remaining band members of Queen.
Cohen is famously known for playing controversial and criticized R-rated roles like Borat and Bruno. The 41-year-old actor wanted to expose the role and make an R-rated film about the gifted gay lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury, who passed away in 1991 from an AIDS-related pneumonia. The surviving band members, on the other hand, do not want to excursively expose that aspect of Mercury’s life and just do a PG-rated biopic.
Due to their creative differences, Cohen has dropped out of the biopic. Producers, which include Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro, are now searching for a new actor to play the role of Freddie Mercury.
There has been no official date announced on when the biopic will be released.
