“Twilight” Breaks Thanksgiving Weekend Box Office Record

Team Edward and Team Jacob definitely showed up in big numbers over the Thanksgiving weekend to keep the final (?- I still don’t think we’ve seen the last of these) installment of the “Twilight” series in the number one spot at the box office.

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 2” drew an estimated $64 million during the five-day period. It’s domestic total is now up to $227 million, internationally the movie has generated another $350 million. Add that up and there’s my proof we will probably see yet another in this series. Think “spinoff.”

“Skyfall” held on to the number two spot bringing in an estimated $51 million over the holiday weekend. Want to be impressed? This, the 23rd in the “Bond” series, has made $790 million worldwide, with us Americans contributing $221 million of that take. That’s a LOT of Daniel Craig.

Rounding out the rest of the top 5-

Number three belonged to Steven Spielberg’s “Lincoln” with an estimated $34 million, followed by number four, the animated “Rise Of The Guardians” which opened with a disappointing $33 million. Early predictions were that this movie would dethrone “Twilight” at the top. Didn’t happen. This is the worst opening for Dreamworks animation since 2006’s “Flushed Away.”

In the number five spot? Ang Lee’s 3-D ‘Life of Pi” bringing in an estimated $30 million.

Other notes of interest- the remake of 1984’s “Red Dawn” (which is really bad, by the way) pulled in some impressive numbers making $22 million. When you consider the total budget of this film was $65 million- not too shabby. I’m crediting fans of  Chris Hemsworth (“The Avengers”) and Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) for these numbers.

The overall box office total for the Thanksgiving break was an estimated $290 million. WELL over the record of $273 million record set back in 2009.
