Disney To Develop New Original ‘Mary Poppins’ Film

Disney continues to reboot their classic favorites! This time the studio is developing a new original live-action musical film for Mary Poppins.

Rob Marshall, who worked on Into The Woods and Chicago, is set to direct the film, with producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt also on board.

The upcoming film will take place 20 years after the original Mary Poppins in Depression-era London. The 1964 screen adaptation, which starred Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, revolves around author P.L. Travers’ first installment in her eight-book children series. The film was massively successful – taking in $100 million at the box office, as well as earning five Oscars (including one for Andrews as best actress).

The remake will draw from Travers’ seven additional novels, illustrating Poppin’s further adventures with the Banks family.

Songwriting duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray, Smash) are both set to compose original music and a new score, with Finding Neverland’s David Magee penning the script.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Disney and Marshall are teaming up with the Travers estate, and have “already earned support from Poppins’ co-composer Richard Sherman, who penned the original film’s famous songs like “Chim Chim Cher-ee” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” with his late brother, Robert.”

The adventures of Mary Poppins was recently retold in 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks. The film revolved around the story of Travers’ meetings with Walt Disney in the early ’60s, who wanted to adapt her Poppins books for the big screen.
