Iggy Azalea Matches Beatles’ Chart Record

It was a mere three months ago when Iggy Azalea unleashed her smash single “Fancy,” but the Australian rapper is quickly carving her name in the music industry. This week, the 23-year-old emcee has managed to do what no artist has done since the legendary group The Beatles in early 1964 – claim the top two spots on the Billboard Hot 100 with his or her first two chart singles.

Iggy Azalea has done the impossible and matched The Beatles’ US chart record, scoring both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Hot 100 with her irresistible hit “Fancy,” featuring vocals from British singer Charli XCX, sitting gloriously at No. 1 and Ariana Grande’s single “Problem,” which features a killer verse from Iggy, holding it down at No.2. In February of 1964, The Beatles held the top two spots for a whopping six weeks with “I Want to Hold Your Hand” at No.1 and “She Loves You” behind at No. 2. Let’s see if Iggy’s time dominating the Hot 100 will survive as long.

With it’s recent voyage up the singles chart, “Fancy” has become the first all-female collaboration to reach No.1 on the Hot 100 since “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya & P!nk topped the chart in 2001. Only two other all-female collabs have managed to reach the top: “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)” by Barbra Streisand/Donna Summer, which spent two weeks on top in 1979, and “The Boy Is Mine” by Brandy & Monica, which spent a spectacular 13 weeks on top in 1998.

Rounding out her accomplishments of the week, Iggy is now the fourth solo female rapper to ever reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her reign at the top with “Fancy” follows other female chart-toppers like Lauryn Hill with “Doo Wop (That Thing)”, Lil Kim with the aforementioned “Lady Marmalade,” and Shawnna with her guest appearance on Ludacris’ “Stand Up.”

Iggy Azalea’s debut album The New Classic, featuring the chart-topping “Fancy” as well as Iggy’s new hit “Work,” is available online and in stores now. The New Classic currently sits at No. 9 on The Billboard 200.
