Pharrell Williams Announces New Album, Release Date

Rapper and singer Pharrell Williams, who was featured on Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” last year, announced that his solo album G I R L will be released March 3.

The new album will feature his Oscar-nominated single “Happy” from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack. The song is currently topping the iTunes Songs chart in the U.S. No other information has been released about the other tracks on the album.

“When Columbia Records presented me with the opportunity to make an album, three things came to mind,” Pharrell said in a statement. “One was the sense of overwhelming honor that I felt when I realized that they were interested in partnering with me on the album that I had always dreamt of making. Two, it would have to feel festive and urgent. And three, I instantly knew it would be called G I R L. I hope you like it.”

G I R L will be Pharrell’s second album. His last album In My Mind was released in 2006, but since then he has been collaborating with different artists and writing songs for pop stars such as Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus.

Last month Pharrell took home four Grammy awards, including Producer of the Year, Album of the Year for Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories, Record of the Year for Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” in addition to Best Pop Duo/Performance for the same song.

Pharrell can next be seen at the Academy Awards, airing Sunday, March 2, where he will perform “Happy” and potentially win an Oscar for the song.
