The Dallas Morning News is reporting that legendary sports broadcaster Pat Summerall has passed away at the age of 82. Summerall worked a record 16 Super Bowls on CBS and FOX television during his 41 year broadcasting career.
Beginning his broadcast career in 1961, Summerall worked at CBS for 32 years before moving to FOX in 1994. He remained at FOX until his retirement from broadcasting in 2002.
The legendary broadcaster was well known for sharing hosting duties alongside John Madden during eight Super Bowls. Summerall and Madden still hold the record for the highest-rated sports program of all-time, Super Bowl XVI in 1982, when over 49% of the nation tuned in to watch the game.
The last game the duo called together was on February 3, 2002 when the New England Patriots defeated the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI at the Louisana Super Dome.
Following his retirement in 2002, Summerall would occasionally make appearances on FOX and ESPN broadcast. The last game he called was the 2010 Cotton Bowl when the Ole Miss Rebels defeated the Oklahoma State Cowboys 21-7.
