On Tuesday, Apple unveiled not just one iPhone, but two new iPhones for the first time ever.
The two new smartphones are the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C. “Business has become so large that this year we are going to replace the iPhone 5 and we’re going to replace it with not one, but two new designs,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said at Apple’s Cupertino, California headquarters. “This allows us to serve even more customers.”
The iPhone 5C (the C for color) comes in a plastic case, has a 4-inch display, and has the same features as the iPhone 5. It also comes in five colors: green, white, blue, pink, and yellow.
The iPhone 5C will cost $99 for the 16GB version, and $199 for the 32GB version, with contracts. Apple will also be making its own cases for the iPhone 5C, which will be sold in many colors for $29.
For the iPhone 5S, there will be a few new features, including a fingerprint sensor for added security and an upgraded camera. It will also contain an A7 chip, the first 64-bit chip in a smartphone, which will increase its processing speed. The iPhone 5S will be available in three colors, including gold. Its price ranges from $199 to $399 with a contract.
Pre-orders for the iPhone 5C begin September 13. Both new versions of the iPhone will be available for purchase beginning September 20 in over 100 countries and on 270 carriers, including China. The newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS 7, will be released on September 18.
By offering a cheaper iPhone, Apple is clearly trying to reach more customers, as Google Inc.’s Android software is gaining popularity.
