Greg Kinnear & Sepideh Moafi Dive Deep on Black Bird

Based on true events, Black Bird is the gripping tale of convicted drug dealer Jimmy Keene’s (Taron Egerton) task of trying to coerce a confession from suspected serial killer Larry Hall (Paul Walter Hauser) in order to gain his freedom.

The six-episode series premieres July 8th on Apple TV+. The show also stars Greg Kinnear as the lead investigator on the Larry Hall case and Sepideh Moafi an FBI agent in the Hall murders.

Dave Morales sits down with the stars to discuss their roles in the compelling true-crime drama. The shocking events of the series being based on real-life events came as a surprise to Moafi.

“The fact that it was inspired by true events blew me away,” said Moafi. “I read the script first before I dove into the research process and I thought and was sure that Dennis had embellished certain story points.”

A Bizarre Tale

The bizarre nature of the story intrigued Moafi saying “The FBI recruiting a prisoner to transfer prisons and not only get a suspected serial killer to confess that he murdered several women but also reveal the location of the bodies, this is kind of unheard of.”

“That this suspected killer was confessing to crimes and nobody was believing him, I couldn’t be this but so many of these details were rooted in fact, that blew me away,” said Moafi.

Starring as Detective Brian Miller, Greg Kinnear described his character as “there are certain elements that are by the book, by the numbers detective chasing down the guy who done it.”

Kinnear credits Dennis Lehane’s writing for creating such remarkable characters. “Dennis’s writing is wonderful and transformative, I loved the introduction of Miller as a father first and foremost,” said Kinnear. “These girls are being killed in this area and I think this landed with him in a very personal way.”

Kinnear also praises Moafi and her acting stating that “She’s fantastic in the show…and we had a wonderful time making this and it was great fun trying to build a relationship that felt lived in.”
