HBO has cancelled its racetrack drama Luck after a third horse dies on set Wednesday.

On Tuesday a thoroughbred that had just been inspected by a vet “reared, flipped over backwards and struck her head on the ground.” The horse was later euthanized, said California Horse Racing Board vet Gary Beck.

After knowledge of the death animal rights groups PETA and the American Human Association protested for the cancellation of all racing scenes.

“It is with heartbreak that executive producers David Milch and Michael Mann together with HBO have decided to cease all future production on the series ‘Luck,’” HBO said in a statement.

The show, which was filming its second season, starred Dustin Hoffman, Dennis Farina and John Ortiz.

The final two episodes of season one are scheduled for March 25. It is unclear if season two will air.
