50 Shades of Grey appears to be suffering a lot of setbacks. First, when Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson were announced as the two main stars, fans were outraged that Matt Bomer and Alexis Bledel weren’t chosen instead. Then, Charlie Hunnam dropped out of the film and was replaced by Jamie Dornan. Since the roster change, the production start-date of the film has been moved from mid-November to early December. Now, the film’s release date has been pushed back over six months from Aug. 1, 2014 to Feb. 13, 2015.
Many speculate that Hunnam’s departure from the erotic film is the cause of the delay, however, Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley insists that was not the main reason for the film’s new release date.
“Together with the international marketing and distribution team, we’ve been looking really closely at the August date and becoming more and more convinced that the right thing to do for the movie was to push it,” Langley stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “So even if Charlie had stayed, we still would have been making the date change.”
Langley added, “We see this movie as a global event. The strength of this book is really worldwide, so we want to be able to take advantage of women who are invariably on vacation with their families during the month of August in Europe.”
Valentine’s Day weekend may serve as a better release date for 50 Shades of Grey since it is a time when American movie-goers tend to watch more romantic dramas.
