‘Riddick’ Scores #1 Spot at Weekend Box Office

Vin Diesel’s new sci-fi flick Riddick took the number one spot at the weekend box office. The third film in The Chronicles of Riddick franchise scored a $18.7 million debut in 3,107 theaters. While the film fell in line with studio predictions, it fell short of 2004’s The Chronicle of Riddick‘s opening of $24.2 million.

Revenue from Lee Daniel’s The Butler fell 40% to $8.9 million, but still enough to hold onto second place. After four weeks at the box office, the historical drama has earned over $91.9 million. The film’s budget was a meager $30 million.

Coming off the success of last week, Eugenio Derbez’s English-Spanish language comedy Instructions Not Included expanded to 717 theaters (an increase of 369%), earning $8.1 million for third place. The film is still averaging a phenomenal $11,297 per theater. In comparison, Riddick is averaging $6,010 per screen. After ten days in theaters Instructions Not Included has earned over $20 million at the box office.

This Friday Robert DeNiro’s mafia-comedy The Family and James Wan’s supernatural horror film Insidious: Chapter 2 will be released in theaters.
